When experiencing launch issues in Ready or Not, you may not be able to open the game at all — clicking Play on Steam does nothing, the game flashes briefly and closes, or the launcher simply never appears. In some cases, you will see no error message whatsoever, making it frustratingly difficult to diagnose the root cause.

Some players report a more specific issue where the game begins to load — the splash screen appears — but crashes to desktop within seconds of startup, sometimes accompanied by a generic Unreal Engine crash dialog. The game runs on Unreal Engine, which has a history of startup compatibility issues on Windows PCs, so this is more common than you might expect.

Here are all the reasons why Ready or Not may not be launching or opening on your PC and every workaround you need to fix it.

Check the Ready or Not server status

Before spending time on local fixes, check whether VOID Interactive’s servers are online. If the game’s backend is down for maintenance or experiencing an outage, Ready or Not may fail to launch or get stuck on the loading screen. You can check the official VOID Interactive social channels or Steam community discussions for real-time status updates.

Also verify that Steam itself is not experiencing an outage, as Steam connectivity issues can prevent game launches even if your local installation is perfectly fine.

Run Ready or Not as administrator

It may sound like a generic fix, but running the game with elevated privileges solves Ready or Not not launching surprisingly often. Insufficient permissions are one of the most common — and most overlooked — reasons for games failing to start on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. Open your Steam Library and right-click onReady or Not.
  2. SelectManage → Browse local filesto open the installation folder.
  3. LocateReadyOrNot.exe, right-click it, and selectRun as administrator.
  4. Alternatively, right-click the .exe → Properties → Compatibility tab → checkRun this program as an administrator→ Apply.

Tip: After confirming the launch, wait at least 30 seconds. Ready or Not can take a while to fully initialise, especially on HDDs. Spamming the Play button during this time may cause multiple conflicting processes and worsen the problem.

Verify the integrity of game files

Corrupted or missing game files are one of the top reasons Ready or Not won’t launch. This can happen after a partial update, a failed download, or interference from security software. Steam’s built-in verification tool will scan all installed files and automatically re-download anything that is damaged or missing.

  1. OpenSteamand go to yourLibrary.
  2. Right-click onReady or Notand selectProperties.
  3. Click on theInstalled Filestab on the left side.
  4. ClickVerify integrity of game filesand wait for the process to complete.
  5. Once done, relaunch Ready or Not and check if the issue is resolved.

Delete Ready or Not mods

This is the most confirmed fix for Ready or Not not launching after a game update, and even VOID Interactive’s own developers have acknowledged it. Outdated or broken .pak mod files are frequently incompatible with the latest game version and will cause an immediate crash at startup.

  1. PressWindows + Eto open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ready Or Not\ReadyOrNot\Content\Paks
  3. Select all mod.pakfiles (holdCtrland click, or drag to select all).
  4. PressDeleteto remove them. If unsure, you can also delete the entirePaks folderfor a clean slate.
  5. Go back to Steam and verify the integrity of game files to restore any essential files.
  6. Try launching Ready or Not again.

Tip: You can also launch Ready or Not in Safe Mode directly from Steam to confirm whether mods are the culprit. If the game starts in Safe Mode but not normally, broken mods are your problem.

Restart your PC and close background processes

A full reboot clears memory conflicts, background service clashes, and lingering game processes that can block Ready or Not from launching. If you last closed the game improperly — or if Steam crashed — old Ready or Not processes may still be running in the background.

  1. PressCtrl + Alt + Deland openTask Manager.
  2. Look for anyReadyOrNot.exeorSteamprocesses still running.
  3. Right-click each one and selectEnd Task.
  4. Close all unnecessary background applications to free up system resources.
  5. Fully restart your PC and try launching the game again.

Force the game to use your dedicated GPU

On gaming laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics, Windows sometimes defaults Ready or Not to the weaker integrated GPU. Since the game is graphically demanding, this causes an immediate crash at launch. Forcing the game to use the dedicated graphics card resolves this.

  1. OpenWindows Settingsand go toSystem → Display → Graphics.
  2. FindReady or Notin the app list. If it is not listed, clickBrowseand add the executable manually.
  3. Click on Ready or Not and selectOptions.
  4. ChooseHigh Performanceto force it to use the dedicated GPU.
  5. ClickSaveand then relaunch the game.

Allow Ready or Not through your firewall and antivirus

Security software is a common and often silent reason why Ready or Not fails to launch. Your antivirus or Windows Defender Firewall may be blocking the game’s executable or its network connections without showing any visible error. To test this, temporarily disable your antivirus and try launching the game. If it opens, your security software is the culprit.

To permanently fix this without disabling your protection, add Ready or Not as an exception:

  1. Note the full installation path of the game (find it via Steam → Right-click → Manage → Browse local files).
  2. Open theWindows Securityapp and go toFirewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall.
  3. ClickChange settings, thenAllow another app.
  4. Browse to the Ready or Not installation folder and selectReadyOrNot.exe.
  5. Make sure bothPrivateandPublicnetwork boxes are checked.
  6. ClickOK, restart your PC, and try launching the game again.

Note: If you use a third-party antivirus such as Malwarebytes, Bitdefender, or Kaspersky, find its exclusion or whitelist settings and add the Ready or Not executable there as well.

Repair Visual C++ and run SFC / DISM scans

Ready or Not depends on Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages to run correctly. If these components are missing, corrupted, or out of date, the game will crash at startup without displaying a clear error. Similarly, corrupted Windows system files can also prevent the game from launching.

Run an SFC and DISM scan

  1. Press theWindows key, typecmd, and runCommand Prompt as administrator.
  2. Typesfc /scannowand pressEnter. Let the scan complete fully.
  3. Once done, typeDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand pressEnter.
  4. Wait for the DISM scan to finish, then restart your PC.
  5. Try launching Ready or Not again.

Repair Visual C++ Redistributables

  1. OpenSettings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Search forMicrosoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
  3. Click on each version listed and selectModify → Repair.
  4. If any version is missing, download the latest Visual C++ Redistributables from Microsoft’s official website and install them.

Update Windows and your graphics drivers

Outdated graphics drivers are one of the most common triggers for Ready or Not not launching. Since the game is built on Unreal Engine and uses DirectX 12 by default, it requires up-to-date GPU drivers to initialise correctly. An outdated driver can cause an immediate crash without any warning.

  1. OpenDevice Managerfrom the Start menu.
  2. Expand theDisplay adapterssection and right-click your GPU.
  3. SelectUpdate driver → Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Alternatively, download the latest driver directly fromNVIDIA GeForce Experience,AMD Radeon Software, orIntel Arc Controldepending on your GPU.
  5. Also check forWindows Updatesvia Settings → Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  6. Restart your PC after updating and relaunch Ready or Not.

Switch DirectX version (try DirectX 11)

Ready or Not runs on DirectX 12 by default, but on some hardware configurations this causes a crash at launch. Switching to DirectX 11 is a straightforward workaround that has helped many players get the game running while waiting for an official patch.

  1. Open yourSteam Libraryand right-clickReady or Not.
  2. SelectPropertiesand find theLaunch Optionsfield.
  3. Type-dx11into the field and close the Properties window.
  4. Launch Ready or Not and check if the crash on startup is resolved.

Disable fullscreen optimisations and overlays

Windows fullscreen optimisations and third-party overlays (Discord, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, Steam Overlay) can conflict with Ready or Not’s launch process. Disabling them takes under a minute and has been reported to fix launch failures on several systems.

  1. Navigate to the Ready or Not installation folder and right-clickReadyOrNot.exe.
  2. SelectProperties → Compatibility tab.
  3. CheckDisable fullscreen optimisationsand clickApply → OK.
  4. InSteam, go to Settings → In-Game and uncheckEnable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
  5. Disable any other overlays such as Discord or GeForce Experience Overlay temporarily.
  6. Try launching Ready or Not again.

Perform a clean reinstall of Ready or Not

If none of the above fixes have worked, a full clean reinstall is often the definitive solution. This wipes any corrupted files, misconfigured settings, or leftover mod data that could be blocking the game from launching.

  1. Back up your saved game data if needed. Save files are typically located at:C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\ReadyOrNot
  2. Open Steam, right-clickReady or Not, and selectManage → Uninstall.
  3. After uninstalling, manually delete the remaining Ready or Not folder from:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\
  4. Restart your PC.
  5. Reinstall Ready or Not fresh from your Steam Library.
  6. Launch the game and check if the issue is resolved.
